Shelter News 11
Valentine’s Day 2015 at the Phinney Ridge Men’s Winter Shelter was not what I’d call romantic. It’s not something we look for in our ministry to homeless men. However, if you are a person in your mid twenties looking for a good place to take your special girlfriend on Valentine’s Day, it is a good place to volunteer. Or so thinks Michael and Christina. Thank you very much for serving this Saturday.
Of course, it is what might be called a “cheap date”. The Phinney Neighborhood Association brought by very good “breakfast” casseroles with fresh fruit and yogurt. That made serving very easy thank you. And my broccoli cheddar with three cheese raviolis left over from the night before is becoming the all time favorite UGM provided meal. (except I’m out of raviolis.) But I don’t think a free dinner was the selling point for Michael or Christina. I try to always assume that people serve because the love of Christ is at work in their hearts. Even when they don’t know Him. But Michael and Christina do. And that’s the selling point for them.
It was a quiet evening at the Shelter. A good time for listening to the stories of men. And catching up on some much needed sleep.
In other news of the week, Krista attained grandmother status in her serving of some very tasty sloppy Joes. The esteemed status is officially obtained when one or more of the men says they are reminded of how good their grandmother’s cooking was. But one doesn’t get an award or anything like what is normally thought of as a reward for grandmother status. Instead a person gets treated to the same love the Father bestowed on His Son, Jesus. It’s the best kind.
