Shelter News Two, 12-2-2015

Finally open and very thankful. The shelter is near our capacity of 20 and the men, UGM staff, and volunteers seem to be settling in. We’ve had several new servers already this year and that is a great encouragement to me, because I know who these people are serving and He takes care of His servers.

Of course this was Thanksgiving week so let me tell you how the eating went. Thursday we had wonderful turkey and mashed potatoes and stuffing and roasted vegetables and muffins and pumpkin pie provided by the KAPKA school complete with place settings. Nice touch. Eric from KAPKA and Mike from Mosaic served.

The next night Dami and I served what I call straight leftovers. That means we simply were reheating the exact same meal from the night before. No complaints there. Thanksgiving leftovers are one of our constitutional rights.

The next night we mixed things up with a double back leftover dish of spaghetti and meat balls provided by Matt and Holly from the night before Thanksgiving. Very tasty and most were ready for a turkey break. (We also finished off the stuffing.)

But wait, there’s more turkey. I call this “enhanced leftovers.” Eileen said, how about creamed turkey and peas over biscuits? Perfect, only we’ll put it over the leftover mashed potatoes that our good neighbor Verlon brought by.

The next night Eileen made chicken taco soup, very hardy. Only she didn’t make enough. Good thing we had Turkey and pumpkin pie back up. We did serve salad most every night. And oranges from Bud and Kathy on the corner.

The men have been mostly quiet this week. Is there really such a thing as a turkey coma? It has been good to see some old faces and some new. If you would like to serve, you can call or email me or John and get a schedule. I suggest you do it sooner than later because 29 short term missionaries sent out by Mosaic will be returning in two weeks from India. They might need something to do, something that Jesus asked them to do.
