Shelter News 21

It’s been a quiet week at the Phinney Ridge Winter Men’s Shelter. The men have been content and thankful for the food and shelter provided. Of course, this being our last week of the season, there have been quite a few “I’m really gonna miss this place.” and “I wish you guys were open all year.”  type statements.  One volunteer remarked that in spite of their quirkiness and at times troublesome behavior she was really going to miss these men. That is the way it is when you love your neighbor as yourself, which is the second law that is like the first, to love God.

The census has been full this week at 20 or so men from 18 to 60 years old. Tonight will be the last Sunday night for Sarah and friends and their excellent serving at the Shelter. The men really look forward to Sunday night.

There was some talk this week about recognizing and honoring the people who have served at the Shelter this year. Of course, this is not really necessary. All who serve get paid in secret by an extremely well to do Patron, God. But if Ray’s Boat House comes up in these conversations then I’m for it.

One special event looming on the horizon is the annual “deep cleaning” party held in the big kitchen and Fellowship Hall (where the men sleep) of Emmanuel. It’s fun for all ages with pizza for lunch on the first day and Kidd Valley on the second. It’s rumored that Ellen Coghill will make an “appearance” sometime on the third day (she is risen). For those of you who have never met Ellen she was the original kitchen master and had a voice like fingernails on a blackboard. But you could get her to laugh if you kept her kitchen clean.

To the men who have stayed with us this year, you can find me or Eileen or Sarah and others most any Sunday at Emmanuel and Mosaic. Church is at 9, 10, and 11. You are of course welcome.
